There are drivers for various Ethernet and WiFi dongles included with the 
kernel.  Probably not *all* Ethernet and WiFi dongles, but many of them.

I know of one I got on E-bay works.  It is an USB 2.0 / 10/base100 (100mbit) 
dongle.  I got it for a PocketBeagle.
