Linux image 6.8.0-31 won't boot

Thank you for your reply Liam.

The laptop is a recent purchase and at the moment I don't know what 
version it is. I'll check for any firmware updates anyway.

I check for Xubuntu each day hoping the an update will cure the problem. 
In the meantime, I will just have to continue to boot from the previous 
linux image.
