I have been encouraged by what I had been reading about Betterbird, a
compatible fork of Thunderbird
https://www.betterbird.eu/
HOWEVER, I have only just (this hour) been able to get Betterbird to
recognize the existing settings files for my (now snap packaged in 24.04)
existing Thunderbird installation. I was inspired to try again because of
this thread...
The Ubuntu upgrade from 23.10 to 24.04 kept my existing settings files, but
for some reason Betterbird in a Flatpak has trouble seeing the existing
directory.
Here's what (I think) I did that seems to have worked (leaving out all my
false starts)...
1) I installed Betterbird via flatpak, and confirmed it runs.
2) I created a symbolic link to the ~/.thunderbird directory in place of
the .thunderbird directory in
~/var/app/eu.betterbird.Betterbird/
3) I checked to make sure the permissions looked right for the .thunderbird
link and the source folder (I checked user and group access)
4) THEN I started betterbird in a terminal with the -p (choose profile) flag
$ flatpak run eu.betterbird.Betterbird -p
5) I chose (and renamed from "default" to reduce confusion) my Thunderbird
profile, and opened Betterbird.
6) I pinned a launcher for the app while the app icon was in the tray.
Since I have only JUST NOW gotten it to work with my Thunderbird profile
(after beating my head on it for a bit) I cannot report any problems. I
just made a backup copy of the .thunderbird directory.....! Time to give it
a thorough try.
