On a properly working Debian 12 system;

sharky5% dir -l /etc/mysql/my.cnf
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 24 Oct 20  2020 /etc/mysql/my.cnf -> /etc/alternatives/my.cnf
sharky5% 
sharky5% dir -lL /etc/mysql/my.cnf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1126 Nov 29  2023 /etc/mysql/my.cnf
