I don't use GNOME if I can possible avoid it, but I do know that the
GNOME edition of Ubuntu includes 2 display servers: X.org and Ubuntu.

You didn't tell us which one you are using, so we don't know. But on
the login screen, click the cogwheel, and whichever you are using, try
the other one.
