It's true that this usually means a hardware issue and should
certainly be considered for the machine that's attempting to access
the NAS. Hardware issues can cause any number of symptoms. The
symptom Jeff is experiencing is a permission issue:

I'd be curious about the permissions of the ShellScripts directory,
but would also keep in mind that incorrect permissions may be the
result of a hardware issue and should be investigated accordingly.
