I's just a novice Linux user and occasionally dabble in Python 
programing so much of what Ian suggested of over my head, but I have 
been following this thread with interest. Above you said: "I just did
another update but what got installed seems unrelated and the problem
persists."

I'm sure you did maybe I missed you saying it, but did you check what 
was installed during the update that messed up Python for you.
