--- no soundcards ---

I recently bought a Lenovo Ideadpad Slim 3 for a relative and installed 
Xubuntu 23.10 on it. The only problem is there is no sound. The command 
cat /proc/asound/cards results in "--- no soundcards ---".

A lengthy Internet search for an answer shows that "no sound" problems 
after an upgrade are not uncommon and many solutions are offered but I 
couldn't find anything that lead to a solution for an undetected sound card.

I should mention that I removed Windows 11 because the updates were 
painfully slow so I don't know if the sound worked under Windows or not. 
I imagine that it would have. Perhaps Xubuntu 24.04 will detect the 
sound card.

Can anyone offer a solution?
