there are no snaps in /var/snap, only writable data of server snaps is
stored there, snap packages themselves live under /var/lib/snapd/snaps
by default only a few snaps are pre-installed (typically core20/22,
firefox, the gnome library snaps (used by firefox), snapd and lxd (but
lxd is completely disabled until you use it for the first time
actuvely) ...
the only server snap in that list is lxd, have you been using lxd
containers excessively on these VMs as that would be the only way to
actually populate some bigger amounts of data into /var/snap with the
preinstalled packages ...
