Failure installing Ubuntu 24.04 on an USB stick

The stick was very slow, but okay otherwise. I've let it complete the
installation of 24.04. That was on my laptop, which has only USB2, but that
*wasn't* the bottleneck here. It took about five hours, but it completed.
But then the EFI System Partition, the kernel and Grub were all missing...

When I installed 22.04 on the new stick, on the laptop as well, it took 20
minutes. Here, the USB2 should be the bottleneck.

Yes, it's just surprising that this seems not to work at all with the 24.04
installer.
Maybe I make another attempt with 24.04 and the new USB stick.
