I just looked and got this:

$ grep ata7 /var/log/syslog | wc -l
6145

That's an awful lot of syslog messages for a drive that's empty.

I could be mistaken about which optical drive it is - there was a
blank DVD in the DVD-writer drive. I'm still never sure which one is
which. Probably ought to remove both and buy and external one, but
that's another story for another day.

I'll try again tomorrow and see what happens.
