I think the modules are tied to a specific kernel, so you probably should purge all the 6.8.0.40 packages. If I understood it right, you have an older kernel running, so it should be safe. But you will also purge the linux-image-nvidia package which means that you won't get kernel updates any more automatically. So you should manually check for kernel updates until you get a working updated kernel. Then you can install linux-image-nvidia again.

If it is good for Ubuntu it is good for Xubuntu as well because the nouveau driver can be used with any desktop (I'm using it with KDE).
