Backup Thunderbird using cron

I posted this on the Thunderbird support web forum,with no response. 
Maybe someone here is doing it.

I assume Thunderbird needs to be shutdown to do a proper backup.



I want to cleanly close Thunderbird sometime overnight, copy the profile 
folder to a backup location, then restart Thunderbird. Is this possible? 
I want a backup solution that works without manual intervention.
