Thank you for your reply Colin,
More often than not ctl alt f1 (may need to log in here) followed by ctl
alt f7 restores the laptop to normal operation. If that fails then
killing xorg sometimes does the job. If that also fails then reboot with
"sudo shutdown -r now" and finally if that also fails, start again with
"sudo shutdown -h now".
Sometimes the desktop freezes at the login dialogue box but mostly the
desktop freezes during normal usage. The user is unsophisticated and
uses the laptop solely to play card games, kpatience or pysolfc and
nothing else. The freeze doesn't seem to occur under Windows but isn't
used because the Windows card games are just too lame to bother with.
