Ubuntu 20.04.5 LTS with MATE - can I use do-release-upgrade?

I have an HP workstation laptop 8560w with Ubuntu 20.04.5 LTS and the MATE
desktop.
I also activated Ubuntu Pro yesyterday to get ESM in place.

This system is ready for a release upgrade but I am reluctant because I am
running MATE desktop since I cannot stand the Ubuntu default desktop...

I do not care for eye candy at all being 76 and with no interest in blue text
against a black background etc...
And having to search for everything when I know what I want to use.

QUESTION:

Will a release upgrade using "sudo do-release-upgrade" result in the dektop
being changed to whatever Ubuntu developers consider the "default and best"???
I want to keep my MATE desktop configured as is.
