Well, the thing is, you got the *wrong* hardware for that. Nexus 10 is
*intended* as a "closed" / "black box" machine: it runs the Android tablet OS
and is not really a machine for tinkering (low-level learning) with. If you
want a machine to learn how to build and deploy your own kernel or distro, you
need to get a machine that is designed (or at least has support) for that
purpose. A machine that includes a serial console and has documentation and a
support community. From what I can tell, the Nexus 10 is like an iPad: it is
intended for end-user tablet users, who are not looking to run anything but
the "factory supplied" O/S (Android) and standard App Store apps. It is not a
machine meant for "tinkering with" -- the Raspberry Pi and the other "flavor"
Pis are specificly designed for tinkering -- the original philosophy of the
Raspberry Pi Foundation was to create a cheap little computer that anybody
(including esp. children) could afford to buy and "tinker" with: write their
own software both applications and yes, even whole OSes from the ground up, if
they so choose. The various other "flavor" Pis follow the same philosophy
(more or less). Yes, an *experienced* developer has been able to get a
mainline Linux kernel to run on it, but it sounds like it is something of a
"hack", probably not really a newbie thing.
