If you need to use the hp drivers, the first step to do is "sudo apt 
purge cups-browsed", its over-riding your hplip install with its own 
broken one size fits all (but doesn't) drivers, blocking hplip's access 
in the process. I've got to do that for both of my brother printers, 
which work to their full advertised capability with the brother drivers 
available for free from the brother-america site.
