This almost always happens when I go into a Zoom session. The X
appears most places in the zoom. It reverts to the arrow (or other)
cursor when I mouse over a Zoom control (audio, video, etc) or outside
the window.
Then it sticks - sometimes, especially after the Zoom session ends.
The only way I've been able to reset it is to change the mouse theme
in the settings app.

I'm using a Gigabyte NVidia GEForce GT 1030 video card (the CPU
doesn't have an integrated GPU). I'm using the nouveau drier because
the Nvidia driver for this card just plain does not work properly.
E.g., xscreensaver doesn't function properly and I depend on that.
HTH.
