Aptitude seems to be in maintenance mode as far as development goes. 
Major bug fixes, feature enhancements, and added optimizations have 
stopped in lieu of largely just making sure it builds for new Debian 
releases. That's all ok, a lot of programs in the repos haven't seen 
active development in years, decades even. But as long they work and 
their bugs aren't too prominent, they're still useful. For how long, 
though, is the question.

Apt, OTOH, is undergoing active development and feature-wise is on par 
with aptitude. Unless you really pine for a package manager TUI, and a 
frequently psychotic dependency solver, there's not much reason to 
continue to use aptitude, IMO.
