Isn't this exactly what Ubuntu is aiming for with snaps?

To be frank though I don't really see what the problem is.  For less
technically minded users, using the Desktop version, there should not
be a problem as everything they want should be available via the
Software Manager.  For the more competent users the fact that there is
a choice of tools and sources available allows them to choose the one
that best suits their needs.
