Hey, you know what though, maybe you can trick the GRUB that's on the
HDD into booting the USB? It's too complicated for me to probably help
with tonight (it's 11:50 PM over here), but you might be able to tweak
the grub.cfg on your host to let you boot the kernel and initramfs on
the USB and let you get into the Debian installer. However, this runs
the risk of bricking the device if something goes awry, so you may want
to take out the HDD and verify that you can attach it to another device
in order to do an install a different way should that fail.
