PS: Keep in mind that microphones aren't CD players with more or less
identical output signals and even the source of a microphone (everything
possible from a pin falling on a flokati rug to a trombone) is way
different to the source of a CD player (a CD, even with an already
recorded pin or trombone). Attenuating or amplifying a signal from a CD
player in the digital domain can be done without side effects.
Attenuating or amplifying a signal from a microphone requires
optimisation in the analog domain, e.g. to avoid noise. IOW it requires
a microphone pre-amp that allows to adjust the analog level (either
manually or digitally remote controlled), the digital level would always
stay un-attenuated and un-amplified. This isn't a perfect explanation,
but quite close to it.
