WS=> HP also says that that printer should work with Linux.  I was just 
tired of not having a really satisfactory solution so out of 
desperation, I went for a solution that seems to work. Maybe there is 
some problem in the USB controller of the old computer.

  Last month, I got a new computer which I will eventually dual boot.  
Once I can get Linux on that computer, I will try again. Any way, to all 
that offered possible solutions, thanks for the help.
