For me it sometimes takes a minute or so for the graphics to show.
If three hours, something's ddefinitely wrong!

Do you use KDE as the desktop environment?
If not, you might want to find out what command is used for your DE
specifically.
Examples;
For Gnome it seems to be "killall -3 gnome-shell".
XFCE; "xfce4-panel -r && xfwm4 --replace"
