it would also happen with rpm or a tarball (as i said in another post
in this thread already), it really has nothing to do with whatever you
replace the deb with, but with the apt dependency mechanism itself ...
it is a shortcoming of the apt package management and the requirement
to use virtual packages like www-browser or x-www-browser for packages
that i.e. provide help packages in html format so they can spawn a
html-viewer/browser to display them.
despite the text in the transitional package, it is the one empty
package that makes "firefox" provide www-browser and set the proper
alternative in /etc/alternatives ...
with lunar being so close to final freeze i fear we might not see it
seeded back into the iso in time though, the fix might actually land
only in 23.10 (and perhaps we can then call the package "firefox-
support" or some such to avoid any confusion about the name)
