Hi,

much likely you get the best information, if you get in contact with
longpanda.

"Contact

You can discuss general ventoy issues in the forums or send a mail to
longpanda admin at ventoy.net or join in the QQ group 688429778" -

EFI boot is a PITA, grub is a PITA. However, for Ventoy grub is probably
the best choice, since grub has got also some pros. EFI with or without
secure boot enabled has got no pro at all.

Recently an automated Xubuntu update removed an "essential" Microsoft-
signed binary from the Xubuntu install.

root at xubu:~# apt update && apt full-upgrade
   [...]
WARNING: The following essential packages will be removed.
This should NOT be done unless you know exactly what you are doing!
     shim-signed
   [...]

I aborted, to check what this "essential" package is good for.
"Secure Boot chain-loading bootloader (Microsoft-signed binary)" -
https://packages.ubuntu.com/focal/shim-signed

When I run an update again...

root at xubu:~# apt update && apt full-upgrade
   [...]
336 packages can be upgraded. Run 'apt list --upgradable' to see
   them.
Waiting for cache lock: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock-
frontend. It is held by process 1566 (unattended-upgr)... 70s

...the package "shim-signed" got removed by process 1566 (unattended-
upgr), for more see

There are other issues with (not really) user-friendly automated
processes. A thingy called "friendly-recovery" replaced a working
grub.cfg with a broken grub.cfg.

Ralf
