Update:

FWIW, since I tried (and apparently failed) to install the latest
hplip, the scanner has been working a whale of a lot better. I don't
know if this is the cause or if some of the bugs I've reported to the
simple-scan  folks were fixed, but:

1) The 'automatic' scan page size setting now works more properly - to
get letter sized scans from the flatbed, I had to set the paper size
preference to 'letter.' Now with that setting, it adjusts the scan to
legal size with a black box at the bottom, but 'automatic' works the
way I would expect it to.

2) All the scans I've done on the flatbed has run smoothly and
quickly, without the wonky stops one more times part-way through the
scan.

3) The scanned area now displays properly again - it used to show the
scan image all at once only at the end, now it shows the pieces as
they are done.

Strange, but it works so much better.

Of course, I had to go and clean up all the junk the install left
behind - I made the mistake of installing from my Downloads directory,
which got cluttered up with gobs of files (.o and such) I wasn't
expecting, and it did not complete the install, so it did not do its
own cleanup.

Dunno if that helps. I'd still really like to know what the problem
with the hplip install was in case I ever need to do this again (God
forbid).
