I think that's rather dependent on the brand label on your printer. I
have a couple brothers here that if i convince cups
to leave the brother drivers alone, both do duplex exactly as you
expect. Generally you have to remove by purging,
cups-browsed. That thing has a mind of its own. Nuke it.
