This is good advice and I agree.

Also, Marco, you did not specify if you were using MBR or GPT. I would
recommend MBR for such relatively small drives.

I do not have a T430 but I do use two T420 machines, and I know their
firmware can switch between BIOS and UEFI mode according to the boot
settings.

If you install a new copy of Ubuntu you will get an ESP whether you
like it or not, so you may as well use UEFI boot. But you will need to
set the firmware to boot from the 2nd disk and not the 1st disk if you
want the machine to be bootable in the config you describe.
