How do I get a realtek wifi dongle to work

There's a very good chance that your dongle will work directly in Ubuntu.

Open a terminal, and type "sudo dmesg -w" and enter a few blank lines 
(hitting the ENTER key) to make sure you see exactly what will get 
displayed.

Then plug in your WiFi dongle.

Then check the display of dmesg... You should see things like "Product: 
RTLxxxx WLAN Adapter"

If you see that... you're done. You just need to configure your 
network... Voila...
