PMFJI.. Oh dear. If I was in your position, I would probably do one of two
options:-
1. Reinstall the operating system.
OR:-
2. Try to boot Ubuntu Linux from removable media, mount your main boot
drive as something, and then do a chown on the /etc files you are having
problems with.
