I'm confused.

1.

dd if=/dev/zero of=tempfile bs=1M count=1024

does write a file to a drive (it does read from /dev/zero).

2.

IIUC write is up to 3 GB/s or 2.79 GiB/s and read is up to 3.45 GB/s or
3.21 GiB/s. For dd MB seems to be for 1000*1000, and M for 1024*1024
etc..
