none of the current official ubuntu flavours will run on 1G RAM in any
usable way (with luck xubuntu or lubuntu would bring up a desktop on
that but starting an application like a browser will likely already be
a hard hit) ... for such low end systems you might want to take a look
at something like puppy linux:

they offer a variant fully based on ubuntu that comes with pre-
installed low-end focused apps ...
