I presume that you are using the (default) GUI login (gdm?) and my guess is
that gdm (or whatever it is called now) is doing this (reverting to the login
screen on VT terminal changes). *I* have disabled the GUI login (change the
default target to the plain multi-user target). I get the (black) console
login screen and use startx to fire up the GUI (I have some contitional code
in a couple of my machines' login script to do this automagically).
