Maybe you are editing sendmail configuration files, but actually you are
using a sendmail replacement?

I was used to use msmtp as a replacement and sendmail is still a link
against msmtp on my Arch Linux:

[rocketmouse at archlinux ~]$ /usr/bin/ls -l /bin/sendmail 
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 5 Mar 26 21:56 /bin/sendmail -> msmtp
