I thought I'd jump in and add that if your power supply starts to go,
it can take all sorts of other hardware with it on its way out. Power
supplies can suddenly turn into Pac-Man monsters that relentlessly
chomp their way through your system until you stop them. It's only
after you notice all sorts of things failing in strange and often
unrelated ways in your computer that you put two and two together and
realize the culprit is the power supply.
We've been there a time or two over the years and it ended up
motivating us to build new systems rather than replace the various
parts in the old ones.
So far, you seem to have had some really good luck, but this is just
something to ponder, since that attached backup drive would be
potential Pac-Man food for a voraciously hungry power supply.
