Wildly inconsistent scanning speed Xubuntu 22.04 + HP OfficeJet 4654

I have an HP OfficeJet 4654 All-in-One device I routinely use for
scanning large documents.

The sheet feeder jams regularly for no apparent reason - it's clean
and the path is unobstructed.

What's worse is that the speed of the scans is wildly inconsistent.
Some pages zip right through, and others scan slowly in stages. The
printout I'm scanning right now is all black and white, great
contrast, and some pages take a few seconds, others more like a
minute.

It's out of warranty and free support, and Google can't handle a
question like this well.

Can anyone recommend a good, high-speed scanner, preferably all-in-one
with color printouts for a reasonably low price? This one was under
$80 new (the ink refill was almost as much as a new printer), but for
my next one I want a fast, more reliable scanner.

I tend to like HPs because they tend to be highly Linux compatible,
but at this point I'm less fond of them - this is the second OfficeJet
that deteriorated in scanning speed this way.

Suggestions welcome.

Mark
