I took your advice and downloaded Ventoy...
Seems like what it does is to reformat an USB stick in a special way that is not
obvious leaving the stick seemingly empty when viewed in Windows.

Then you just copy in the ISO files to that stick as many as will fit.

I did so and put Ubuntu-Mate, GParted-Live and Ubuntu-Server ISO files there.
Then I booted my problem machine with the USB attached and a selection menu
appeared where I could run GParted (tried) and Ubuntu ISOs.

Ventoy is pretty neat, I must say! So thanks for pointing it out!

So I have now booted Ubuntu-Mate in order to check it out and eventually install
it on top of the not so well working Ubuntu-Desktop that reboots the computer
every 384 seconds unless you log on to the desktop from the login screen...

In any case the live Ubuntu-Mate looks more like I want a computer desktp to
behave!

Now I just have to go through the hoops of installing it so it replaces the
existing ubuntu without resizing the partitions etc, preferably letting me
select on which partition to install it on and leave everything else untouched.

I hope it is possible to completely disable all traces of "power saving"
functions also on the logon screen, because this is where this computer will
spend most of its life basically working as a server but with a VNC desktop
available over the LAN.
