boot error, cannot upgrade kernel

I'm pretty sure the two I've tried are proper kernels, download from

   https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D

Checksums validated.

Not for production, to be sure; but I'm putting them on a new laptop and
the reason for the update is to get the laptop working better.
