never ask google if you value your privacy, use something like duckduckgo...
That said, I subsequently found numerous references for what I needed to
do to rewrite the boot from the usb stick.
Unfortunately, none of them solved my problem, although they did rewrite
the boot sector (I assume). Upgrading the kernel after rewriting the boot
blocks, then rebooting, fails with the same error,
Error: can't find command 'hwmatch'
Error: file /boot/vmlinuz-5.15.6-091906-generic has invalid signature
I believe I am going to have to reinstall from scratch.
