Thinkpad T420 DisplayPort

I'm considering buying a DisplayPort to HDMI cable. An Internet search 
shows that these cables do work, however, there may be a problem with 
sound. I've found sound solutions for Windows but no mention of whether 
or not these cables do actually provide video and sound under Linux. I'm 
wondering if anyone on this list has used such a converter cable with 
success?
