Thanks to Ralf for his suggestion. Three connections appear:
$ ls -d /sys/class/net/*
/sys/class/net/enp5s0/ /sys/class/net/lo/ /sys/class/net/wlp4s0/
I had similar problems using my work laptop to check on critical
updates, and it too could not connect to the internet until I switched
it from the wire to the wifi. That worked, but I still couldn't
connect to the work VPN - I'll take that up with them later (I'm still
out on disability).
Then I thought I'd try the wired connection on my desktop again, and
it is working now, for internet, intranet and resolving URL links.
I think I'll drop back to my old router, which was working fine,
though not as strong throughout the house (as previously noted in
other threads). It never gave me this kind of trouble.
If not, I thank Rikona for the Orbi suggestion. I'll look into it.
Don't really need a mesh router, just one that can each the whole
house.
SOLVED(?): This appears to be a router problem. Hopefully it actually
settles down...
Thanks all!
Mark
