Are you sure you didn't ask for it?

That is not actually the default partitioning... By *default* the Ubuntu
installer creates a single root (/) partition and a swap partition.

It might have something to do with how the VMWare ESX sets up Ubuntu -- there
might have been a some sort of default container or something...
