I know nothing of that one.

Is it write protected, or, read only, or some such thing?

I suggest doing an
ls -l
on the drive, or right clicking on it in a file manager, and checking
its permissions (through Properties, if you use the right click
method).

Have you tried using a different file manager?

I have found that PCmanFM is far superior; more reliable, and, more
effective, than the MATE file manager, caja, so, I use PCmanFM as my
primarey file manager.

I run UbuntuMATE in various versions, and have been able to read and
write to various external USB drives, including creating folders,
without problems. I presently run UbuntuMATE 16.04 and 20.10, and,
have Samsung T5 and T7 SSD drives, two different USB external hard
drives (the old(er) fashioned type - not SSD), and thumb drives of
various capacities, connected, and, in use, without any problems.

So, I believe that the problem is specific to the USB drive.
