USB mountpoints jumping around

Okay, so now the laptop boots properly with the noauto fstab line active and
no usb-drive connected.

I think maybe I should do a mount entry in crontab, to run just before the
scheduled veeam backup job starts, just in case I forget to manually mount
it.

What can I expect now, if I connect the usb-drive after a boot?
I must manually mount the usb-drive now and it will stay mounted until the
next shutdown, correct?
