On the off chance that you have more than one display manager installed,
try this:
$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm
If you have more than one display manager, you will choose the one you
want. (I just tried it on my much-upgraded Ubuntu laptop, and I have THREE,
including lightdm, but it's not the active one.)
Presumably after changing it, you would want to reboot or (otherwise
restart your display manager) and see if it begins behaving as you expect.
