I have a dedicated Epson V10/100 scanner that had problems since 18.04 (I also 
have untried for scaning Epson and HP MFP's) 

worth trying iscan as normal user (not Sudo) it worked for me, simple-scan only 
worked (at all) from sudo but got stuck on scanning for ever
