Is it a good idea to install 21.04 of a Thinkpad T420?

My previous thread dealt with a heat problem cause by an extremely slow
Internet connection. I also mentioned that I've used KDE for many years
and that I've used XFCE with a very old laptop. Some applications, Lucky
backup for example, that are run under KDE also make the laptop run hot.
Liam mentioned that he uses XFCE on his T420 and this has got me
thinking and now I'm wondering about the wisdom of replacing my 20.10
Kubuntu installation with Xubuntu 21.04. However, I'm concerned about
Canonical's warning about not upgrading to 21.04. I really don't want to
boot into a black screen.
I'm in the process of downloading Xubuntu 21.04 while I have a
reasonably fast Internet connection. So, I'm wondering if other Thinkpad
T420 owners have installed version 21.04 without any problems?
