Editing grub boot menu, how to save?

The reason that such a thing doesn't exist is that the label is
generated programmatically, and therefore editing it requires changing
the program (at least if you want to change *only* that thing, and
otherwise preserve the other properties of the Ubuntu boot menu,
including the way in which it's updated on kernel updates etc.).  It
might be best if that were not the case, but that would be a substantial
design change to GRUB.
