What is the make and model of your laptop? That would help narrow things
down.

I had a strange problem with the keyboard of a friend's laptop. One of the
keys behaved erratically and it was traced down to a rather confused chip
that handled multiple tasks and I had to remove the laptop's battery, press
the On button for about 20 seconds and it started behaving again.
